Thrivent: Paying it Forward

Volunteering can improve your life. Making smart financial decisions can also improve your life. Thrivent is a nonprofit that helps with both of those tasks.

Thrivent is more than a financial services organization, however. They’re also a fraternal benefit society, which means their members carry out a fraternal, benevolent purpose, operate under a lodge system, and provide insurance protection to its members. In addition, Thrivent's common bond is Christianity. They offer guidance to their more than two million members with insurance, investments, banking, and more. They are just like any other financial services company, but they also help members make a positive impact by doing good in the communities where they live, work, and worship.

Thrivent members have been giving back for over 100 years. Samantha Mehrotra, the organization’s public relations manager, says, “Just this year (from January 1-August 31) we led 60 Thrivent Action Teams in Sacramento and West Sacramento, bringing 284 volunteers together to raise more than $6,000 for area organizations. Together, members have volunteered over 3,300 hours supporting many churches and nonprofits in the area.” On a national scale, Mehrotra says in 2018, “Thrivent and its members volunteered 15.4 million hours, built or repaired 456 homes through their partnership with Habitat for Humanity, and raised and donated $296 million in outreach funds to help individuals and communities thrive.”

Members can apply to lead a one-time fundraiser, educational event, or service project around a cause they are passionate about; Thrivent helps by giving members a customized set of resources to use for their event, including t-shirts, a promotional pennant banner, “thank you” cards and name tags, and seed money to help kickstart the project.

As for who they help, Mehrotra says, “Thrivent Action Teams support a broad range of organizations and causes, including [nonprofits] and churches in local communities. Teams can also be organized to support individuals and families in need.”

They have many ways to volunteer and give back to communities. Thrivent Action Teams is one way, and they’ve also partnered with Habitat for Humanity, building safe and affordable housing alongside those in need across the U.S. and worldwide. In addition, when disaster strikes, Thrivent members can lead a Thrivent Action Team or donate through Thrivent Choice®. Thrivent Choice provides an online platform for members to have a financial impact on the causes and nonprofits they care about. Thrivent covers all processing fees ensuring 100 percent of the donation goes to help communities and people in need.
